2009-10 Orlando Magic

The defending Eastern Conference Champions made few moves in their quest to get back to the NBA Finals in 2010. One major move was the trading of Rafer Alston, Tony Battie and Courtney Lee in exchange for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson. In January, head coach Stan Van Gundy was named the head coach of the Eastern All-Stars in the 2010 NBA All-Star Game.

The Magic are currently battling the LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers for Eastern Conference Supremacy and are currently sitting at 38-19, just five games back from the Cavaliers.

Previous Seasons

2007-08
The Magic created a stir in the free agent marking by nabbing Rashard Lewis in July, as a second round pick. They also signed Polish center Marcin Gorat, getting his rights from the Phoenix suns. This new surge in talent should stir things up a bit for the Magic, which will hopefully reflect on the court. More excitement is on the way, with the new arena approved - and The Magic are set to play in their new digs by the 2011 season. The new season went underway, however, with some sad news: Point guard Jameer Nelson's father, Floyd Nelson, was found dead in the Delaware river, after his August disappearance. A tugboat repairman, Nelson's death currently remains ruled an accident by authorities.

2006-07
Just one day after signing with the Orlando Magic franchise Head Coach Billy Donovan resigned. He was replaced with Stan Van Gundy who readily accepted the job. It was a move that proved great to the franchise, the team and to Van Gundy. He would lead the team to a 52-30 record, winning the Southeast Division Title and leading them to victory over the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the playoffs. In the Conference Semi’s, the Magic would have trouble with the Detroit Pistons, winning only game 3 and losing the series to the Pistons 4 games to 1.

2005-06
With Grant Hill fully healed the Orlando Magic looked to get back into the thick of the NBA Playoffs. Surrounded by the growing talents of Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson and with their 2nd round pick Travis Diener showing great poise and decision making, the Magic are surely on the right track to get back into the playoffs. Hill would succumb to yet another injury in the preseason, this time a hernia, which hampered his output and forced him to have season ending surgery. The team ended the season with a 36-46 record but promise is in the future for these budding stars.

The Orlando Magic began as an expansion team in the National Basketball Association in 1989 along with the Charlotte Hornets, the Miami Heat and the Minnesota Timberwolves. The first coach for the Magic was Matt Guokas and he helped select the team’s first roster. In their initial draft, the Magic selected Nick Anderson with the 11th overall pick. Their first team, which completed an 18-64 record, had a team that included Reggie Theus, Scott Skiles, Terry Catledge, Sam Vincent, Otis Smith and Jerry Reynolds.

Over the years, the Magic have had a number of top players on their squads to include Shaquille O’Neal, Mike Miller, Scott Skiles, Tracy McGrady, Hedo Turkoglu, Horace Grant, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Jameer Nelson and most recently Dwight “Superman” Howard.

The best record the Magic ever complied was 60-22. That team was led by Shaq and Penny but they had the misfortune of meeting the 72-10 Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Magic would succumb to the eventual NBA Champion Bulls in a four game sweep. The loss would lead to Shaquille leaving the Magic for the flash and cash the Los Angeles Lakers provided.

The Tracy McGrady era began in 2000 and he stayed with the team for four seasons but never managed to get the club back to the Eastern Conference Finals. Then in 2004, the franchise completely dismantled the team keeping only the head coach and a few players. This would work to an extent as the Magic reeled off a 13-6 start. The team flattened out and head coach Johnny Davis was replaced, disrupting the team and pushing them to finish with a 36-46 record.

The next evolution of the Orlando Magic came along with the addition of Stan Van Gundy in the 2007/08 season. Van Gundy led his team into the playoffs clinching the Southeast Division Title and finished the season at 52-30. In the playoffs, the Magic eliminated the Toronto Raptors in five games and fell to the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals in five games.

In the 2008-09 season, the Magic again won the Southeast Division and looked unstoppable. In the NBA Playoffs, they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in six games, took out the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics in seven games and faced the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. The Lakers would prove too much for the Magic and they lost to the Champions in five games.
